Good advice from both previous posters, although I think the $1000 price range is on the very low side.
I haven't had implants but, at one time I had horrible teeth. I married a Viet woman who's uncle is a dentist in Saigon. For less than $1000 he did two root canals, two extrations and 9 crowns!
I know that Maple Dental Clinic in Saigon does implants at about a third of the price as in the west. It is a Canadian company and I have been there. It's clean, modern and professional. Google them if you want or e-mail me for more info.
I didn't need implants and my wife's uncle was a lot more affordable.
The money you spend on a trip/vacation to Vietnam is a lot less than you'll pay to have the work done in the west.

Hi! I can appreciate how badly you feel about wearing a denture. I have upper implants and a fixed bridge and it is a blessing. But I am also in a dental practice so the cost was lab and implants. A HUGE difference. Dental implants vary from 1000. to 2000.00 per an implant. THAT is not the restoration that goes on top. The whole process can take up to 6 months or more for the initial surgery to final steps. However, you have another alternative, and it can be just as nice and is the middle group. This is an implant supported denture. This only requires 4 implants, and a denture that would snap on, you could eat, laugh, smile and not worry about the denture coming out. The only time it comes out is when you want it to and then you brush the denture and the implants and snap back in place. This is about 1/3 the cost of a full arch implant supported fixed bridge and it is much easier to make. You can wear your existing denture while the implants heal and when they have integrated into your jaw, a new implant denture would be made then. I think you should speak to your dentist and have him carefully go over this option with you and this could be a difference of 10-15 thousand dollars. A nice savings and yet you can have a great look and a denture that stays in place! Discuss this with him and an Oral Surgeon and you will see that this may work better for you. Since you lost your teeth so long ago, you may NOT have enough bone to support a full set of implant retained bridges or corwns and so this may actually be the best choice in the long run. Good luck, and if you have any other questions, please ask. Marie

If the tooth were infected it would hurt either locally or possbly on the bottom row (does that sometime). you wouyld have a noticable abcess on the gum or possibly underneath. Drinking green tea will help such things dramatically, also rinsing your mouth with grapeseed oil for 5 minutes a day will keep all abcessed at bay. (squish it around).

The reason why it is so expensive is for a number of reasons. Not all dentist can perform the implants as they need further education. Implant procedures are time consuming and there's a need for the field to be sterile or else it will fail. Not only that, you are talking about implant screws which are not cheap - they can cost up to $1,000 or more depending on the type. There is also the lab fee to consider because it is the lab technician who will mould and shape your teeth in the end.

You might also need skin or bone graft depending on where the tooth is located so the cost of surgery might or might not be factored in.

For what it's worth, implants are a great investments. You'll save bone, you're focusing on a single site and you won't have to worry about a bridge or partial. However, bear in mind that his is a lifetime maintenance and you still need to go back to your dentist for check-ups down the road.

The implants are the most expensive. Depending on where in the country (I assume you're in the US) you live, an implant costs around 1,500-2,000 plus 1,500-2,000 for the crown. However, implants last forever, feel exactly like a regular tooth, can be used exactly like a regular tooth and require no special equipment to take care of them.

Second is, a fixed bridge. Fixed bridge, although they can look enticing, are a royal pain in the neck, because aren't nearly as strong as having a teeth (or an implant), require special equipment to clean them (threaders, special floss), and - especially - the bone under them shrinks. So they initially look great but with time they don't.

Third is, the flipper. Most economical, look poorly, feels very badly (it moves when you eat, so eating in uncomfortable, the gum is always irritated some, in the end you feel like not wearing it or not using it while eating because it's a pain to use it). Also require special maintenance.

I've worn the three of them and my suggestion is, go with the implant, especially for an incisor!!! You won't be able to bite an apple with a flipper, that's for sure!!

Dan W. gave you a great answer. Prices vary and it's a long procedure from start to finish.
Talk to your dentist and develop a plan.

I am a dentist.

18 months is excessively long. There must be some other factors at play here. Was any additional surgery required for placement of the implant, such as bone augmentation, sinus lifts, etc.?

When an implant is placed, a process called "osseointegration" must occur, which is the growth of bone up to the microscopic surface structure of the implant. This process typically takes 3 to 6 months.

As for teeth being removed for the implant, the teeth were likely hopeless to begin with. Nobody removes healthy natural teeth to replace with implants. As far as your appearance, ask for a "flipper".

There's way too much for me to explain here. You need to ask your dentist why it's taking so long.
